Thirty-six adorable 4-year-olds sat quietly on the library carpet at E.R. Dickson as Governor Kay Ivey read ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar.’

“Reading will take you anywhere you want to go,” Ivey told the students.

“The governor was fantastic. The children were wonderful. They were so excited,” said Paula Reese, who oversees pre-k programs for the Mobile County Public School System.
Ivey was in Mobile Wednesday promoting Alabama’s pre-k program ahead of her Gulf Coast Inaugural Celebration at the Lodge at Gulf State Park Saturday.

“We’re going on 12 years being ranked #1 in the nation with our pre-k program. It is phenomenal,” said Reese.

There are currently 61 first class pre-k classes in the Mobile County Public School System with 1,098 children enrolled.

Online applications for the upcoming school year open up January 15th. Reese says children are selected at random in a lottery system.
