Gov. Ivey tours Pre-K benefiting from grant

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – On Thursday students and teachers at Providence Elementary school got a treat to inspire their educations.

It was one of four schools selected to have Governor Kay Ivey visit and read the classic “A Very Hungry Caterpillar.” Ivey recently announced the state was awarded a more than 10 million dollar grant for early childhood education.

At Providence Ivey saw how those dollars will be put to work.

“As educators we invest every day in our children but to know our whole state values the importance of education and how they’re going to not just start at four years old, so it’s not just going to be Pre-K but it’s going to reflect efforts for the entire family,” said Lynette Alexander, the school’s principal. The grant money will go to kids from their birth to five years old. That means it will also help families.

Each student also got a copy of “A Very Hungry Caterpillar” and the school gave Ivey a scroll with Mandarin writing.
